"I encourage listeners to catch the bus and go along for the ride, unburdened by expectations of teleologies, motivic elaboration, or global form." - George Lewis
Dal Niente’s forthcoming recording project with George Lewis marks the first-ever album solely devoted to the artist’s notated compositions. George’s decades of boundary-crossing work as a trombonist, improviser, computer musician, composer, scholar, and multimedia artist have resulted in numerous recordings and awards, including a MacArthur Fellowship (2002), a Guggenheim Fellowship (2015), and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. His work’s resistance to classification invites recording by Ensemble Dal Niente, whose musicians are committed to stretching themselves through thoughtful and ambitious projects.
Dal Niente will record two works written specifically for the ensemble - Assemblage and The Mangle of Practice - as well as Mnemosis and Hexis, which were commissioned by Talea Ensemble (New York) and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players.
