GEORGE LEWIS & FRIENDS: IMPROVISATIVE MUSIC

In the fall of 2017, Ensemble Dal Niente will release the first-ever album devoted to George Lewis’ notated compositions. Although these compositions are notated, they trace their origins to George’s experience as a performer in improvised, computer-based, and multimedia contexts. His research as a scholar of improvisation includes writings on the pervasiveness of improvisation in everyday life, detailed in his contributions as co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Critical Improvisation Studies. George also has roots in the Chicago-based AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) and its School of Music. This concert will highlight multiple musical trajectories with origins in improvisation, including George’s colleague Anthony Braxton, and music by younger artists working in their tradition such as Katherine Young and Jeff Parker. To prepare audiences for the improvised musical world of Anthony Braxton, Dal Niente will engage the audience as participants in improvisation exercises.
